Description

The Raven Players' reading of Return to Sender is part of the Worldwide Readings Project for Ukraine, an effort to inspire performance groups around the world to raise money for humanitarian relief in Ukraine by staging readings of works by Ukrainian playwrights. The reading is scheduled for May 16 and is a benefit for the World Central Kitchen, the project of chef José Andrés to provide meals in response to humanitarian crises. WCK began serving meals within days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has recently announced an expansion to cities liberated in the northern part of the country. Playwright Olga Braga, who is of Ukrainian origin, says Return to Sender is an exploration of what happens when an "us vs. them" mentality leads to a complete breakdown of diplomacy. "This play is deeply personal for me. I know first-hand about the ultimate consequences of polarization which we're seeing in the world today. My goal with Return to Sender is to highlight the importance of empathy and mutual understanding across cultural and national lines." Our suggested ticket donation is $20, but we encourage you to give more if you can. One hundred percent of funds raised through ticket sales and donations will be forwarded directly to the World Central Kitchen, which as of mid-April operates 30 units across Ukraine. Can't make the reading? You can donate directly to our campaign at: https://ravenperformingartstheater.thundertix.com/campaigns/1836. Return to Sender contains mature themes that may not be suitable for all audiences. Proof of vaccination is required for admittance. We require all staff, cast, crew, volunteers, and patrons to be vaccinated. Properly-fitted masks are recommended but not required. The CDC has approved vaccines for all those 5 years of age and older; go to: https://myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov to get a scannable record of your vaccination status on your smartphone.
